34 Weeks!

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

I had my 34th week appointment this morning and all is well.  No weight gain!  (No guilt meant for those of you who are supposed to gain weight during pregnancy…I’m overweight already and not supposed to gain at all.)  My blood pressure was 110/80 still.  And baby’s heartbeat sounds just fine and is in the head down position.

During my next appointment at 36 weeks, the midwife will do the required culture to check for the presence of Strep B and check my cervix for the first time to see where I’m at.

Tonight Dave & I are going to visit the hospital where I’m going to have the baby so we can see the rooms and just get a feel for the place generally so it isn’t strange when I need to go in for real.

Lots and Lots of Baby Related Appointments

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

Between childbirth classes, baby care class, breastfeeding classes, cloth diapering class and “baby-wearing” class, Dave and I have just been running all over the place with baby related stuff.  We’ve also got interviews set-up with pediatricians and a car seat installation appointment.   Tonight I’m attending my first La Leche League meeting with the topic “bringing home baby and beginning breastfeeding”.

We took our baby care class last Friday evening.  Seeing all the variety of new parents was interesting.  There was a couple who looked young and might even still be attending maybe graduate level schooling who took notes feverishly.  A couple who were hyper prepared and not nearly as far a long as I am in the pregnancy.  And an older couple having a second child 13 years after their first.  And several more just normal people with normal questions.

We’ve also taken our first childbirth class; actually our first of four of those classes.  This Saturday we are going to a local store for two classes; one on cloth diapering and another on slings.   We’ve just been absolutely overwhelmed with the variety of cloth diapers available right now.   There are a zillion different options and all of them have pros & cons, it is just a matter of coming up with a configuration of pros and cons we can live with.  So we’re hopeful this class will do that for us.

Thankfully, one of our local state troopers stationed here in town is certified to install car seats so I don’t have to fret about doing that.  I just had to make an appointment with him.

We are getting close to having the baby room prepared.  We have the dresser, but we still need to transform it into a changing table as well.  The changing pad has been purchased, but we just need to make a platform, do some sanding, fix a little trim and repaint the whole thing.   It should look pretty cute when it is complete.  My cat, Bailey, has approved of and decidedly taken over the new chair in the baby’s room.  And the crib is still in a couple of pieces, but coming along.

My mother-in-law is hosting a baby shower for us on June 27th.  I don’t think she’s actually sending out invitations, just letting people know via word of mouth because she’s been pretty infirmed lately with a leg injury.  She’s chosen a nice little Italian restaurant that serves yummy food in which to host the shower.  My mom is actually scheduled to be here during that time-frame so she’ll even get to attend!

So aside from running all over the countryside lately, I’m doing pretty well.  My only real “complaint” is being just pooped.  Occasionally, the baby stretches up into my lungs or jabs my stomach making me feel slightly ill.  And I’ve got the usual pregnancy back and pelvis aches and pains, but nothing really difficult to deal with at all.

Well, I need to go prepare dinner for my dear hubbie and I so that I can attend my La Leche League meeting this evening.

What We’ve Been Up To

Tuesday, May 26th, 2009

Well, my parents were here for nearly a week and did such amazing things for us while they were here.  We’ve gotten more baby clothes, which I need to wash and put away.  I’ve packed the baby bag for the hospital.  Since I had all the supplies, I figured that I might as well take care of it now rather than later.  Curtain fabric for the baby room has been picked out and my mom is working on those for us.

Dave and I have both been working on our family genealogies.  Dave’s back about 5 generations total so far.  He’s got a hard time of it because he’s been unable to tap into any one else’s work yet so the leg work is potentially going to be all his.  I’ve had a little more success tapping into other’s work and might even be back well into the beginnings of the 17th century (1620s and earlier in some cases) and still finding folks born here in North America.  Plus, I might have found leads back to Scotland, England, Ireland, France and Germany with various parts of the family.

We’ve visited the coast of Maine with my parents and had amazing lobster while staring out across the Atlantic.  Pretty awesome.

And I’m still doing really well at 31 weeks pregnant.  I’ve hit my threshold for endurance a few times lately and learned my lesson to take it easier nowadays.  I’ve also discovered that dehydration makes Braxton-Hicks contractions actually harder and slightly uncomfortable.  So staying hydrated and taking frequent breaks keeps me very happy!

Looks Like I’m in the Clear

Wednesday, May 6th, 2009

I had the gestational diabetes test this morning and it looks like I’m in the clear!!!!!!!!!!!!  I had them do both a finger stick and draw blood just so I wouldn’t have to wait until Friday for results.  Thankfully, the midwife thought that was a good idea and my finger stick number was great so she doesn’t foresee much of a different story from the drawn blood work.  Yeah!

Aside from that baby is doing great.  My blood pressure is still perfect.  And all is good!  Again, another YEAH!!  I start going to the midwife every 2 weeks now until 36 weeks when I start going once a week until I deliver.

Well, it is an absolutely perfect day outside so I’m going to go sit on the porch with an ice tea for a few minutes before I get busy doing some more household stuff.

Just in Awe

Tuesday, May 5th, 2009

This afternoon I’ve been taking some of the new baby clothes out of its packaging and getting it ready for laundering.  Everything is just so cute.

Now that the baby room is painted and we’ve converted a big chunk of the room into the baby room, I’ve finally got places to put things.  We still don’t have a dresser in which to put most things, but I have closet space and shelving space to use.  I’ve got one whole shelf devoted to blankets.  I’ve got maybe 8 receiving blankets, 5 normal blankets, 2 fitted crib sheets and some water-proof pads. So I’m feeling good about my blanket supply right now.  I might want to acquire more crib sheets eventually though.

I’ve been having fun actually finally getting a chance to look closely at all the wonderful things folks have given our baby.

It is getting harder to move and breath because the baby is growing up into my rib cage and really pressing on vital organs.  I can still bend over, but it has become this awkward semi-squat move so I don’t squish baby & myself.

Last night Dave heard the baby hiccuping.  He said it sounded like a drum inside my belly.  And he got to feel a few more kicks and watch my belly poking outward randomly with baby movements.  That was pretty awesome.

Tomorrow is my glucose test day to determine if it looks like I’ve developed gestational diabetes.  I need to make a little list of things to ask the midwife tomorrow.  As we are getting further along, I’ve actually got more questions than I did at the beginning.

Fabulous Husband Alert!

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Last night Dave walks in the door, changed out of his work clothes and started taking care of all these  household tasks that he could tell needed done.  I’m not very good at all at telling someone I’m slowing down and can’t take care of everything anymore, not even my husband.  He did like 4 loads of laundry and emptied all the trash containers in the entire house!

If I stand for too long my belly just gets tired and my back starts aching.  And bending over makes me really winded.  If the baby is moving and I’m walking at the same time, ARGH…my belly just feels so tired.  So taking very frequent sit down breaks is my world now.  I’m not complaining at all.  It just is my reason for falling behind on my household chores.  But thankfully, I am blessed with a great man who totally took care of the situation!!  Pretty awesome!

Pregnancy Update: Middle of Week 27

Wednesday, April 29th, 2009

A few weeks into the third trimester and everything is still going wonderfully.  Baby is active and my belly stills seems to grow daily.

I have to laugh at TV shows that have the third trimester pregnant gal eating hordes of food because, with me, there is just no room in there for an enormous meal and a kicking baby.  The other day this show had a pregnant woman say, “stop me if I order three entrees”.  Yeah, right!  I’ve discovered that eating like 6 tiny servings of different things throughout the day is about all I can muster without feeling overwhelmingly full and borderline sick.

Bending over for any length of time is harder now, but no big deal.  Sitting hunched is out of the question or I can’t breathe, but again no big deal.  And I’m not having any problems sleeping yet.

So I’m relishing in this time before my belly is just enormous and it is really nasty hot outside.

I’ve got my next appointment with the midwife on May 6th, which is also the date for my glucose test to make sure I haven’t developed gestational diabetes.  I’m keeping a positive attitude and praying like crazy everything is okay in that department.

God willing, only 10-13 weeks left to go and we’ll have a wonderful baby to hold in our arms.  I’m getting more and more excited to meet this little person.  Not knowing the gender is really interesting.  Everyone I’ve known recently finds out the gender so you know for a long time ahead of time at least what gender to expect.  We’re getting the full surprise.  And I really don’t have any internal maternal instinct pushing me one way or another.

My Belly is Actually Tired

Monday, April 20th, 2009

The third trimester is here!  And my belly is getting pretty huge as is the little baby who keeps doing gymnastics inside it.  Today I’m just pooped.  I even took 2 naps.  This might sound weird, but my belly is actually tired.

I can really tell the baby is putting on some size because I can see kicks and movement now externally, not just feel it.  I always wonder what body part is pushing outward, but I can’t tell that yet.  I can tell when the baby is doing total and complete somersaults though.  There is this huge flip and flop feeling inside that is rather indescribable.

So because of my belly being so tired today, my major accomplishments…I folded & put away two loads of laundry and cleaned the bathroom.

We had roast, potatoes, carrots & onions last night for dinner so there are leftovers!  Yeah, hardly any cooking for me this evening.  I’m going to mince the beef and all the veggies to make kind of a roast hash of sorts and serve that with a salad.  I like being able to turn leftovers from one meal into something that tastes and looks different from the original.

Baby News Update: 22 Weeks

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Baby seems to be doing great and moves around rather often.  The other evening I really thought I got a kick that might have been able to be felt externally, but I couldn’t get the baby to recreate the kick for Dave to feel.

My belly is getting out there.  You know how you just know how much space you take up when navigating spaces and doing things like closing a door in front of yourself?  Well, I’ve discovered that I no longer know my own size because I whacked myself in the belly with our backdoor trying to close it the other day.

I can tell the baby is moving further up inside my abdomen because I’m feeling pressure on my actual stomach.  If I eat a normal sized meal now I’m in misery because the space is becoming a premium in there.  Dave said I’ve turned into a nibbler and kind of graze all day now.  I can’t get my mind past thinking I need three normal meals though and still try to eat that quantity only to suffer misery later.   I imagine that in a couple of days my brain will figure it out and I’ll just eat 3 small meals and several snacks.  I’m still doing okay with weight since I’m only up 8 pounds since the beginning.  Now is the time that all the pregnancy guides say a woman can start gaining a pound a week through the end of the pregnancy so I’ve got to be pretty careful.

My normal clothes, well, I should say the normal clothes I still could fit into are now even getting too small.  Today I put on this pink top that is one of my standard weekly apparel items only to discover it not only doesn’t cover my entire belly anymore, but the buttons are now being pulled tight.

My back is even doing decently these days.  I’ve been really being careful and pretty much not helping Dave around the sugarhouse with the maple syrup much at all.  He’s got to work really hard, but if I’m not careful then I’m in misery that evening.  Just one of the things I had to learn as a 36 yr old pregnant gal.  I ain’t 23 anymore…

As soon as we’ve put the sugarhouse and all things related to syrup production away for the season, we’ll start walking probably every other evening at the track.  I keep reading about how important walking is during that last trimester so I’m going to force myself to keep it up so maybe labor & delivery is eased somewhat for me.  I’m trying everything to avoid as many of those first baby, older mom, too many medical interventions difficulties that can easily arise.

Only 6 more weeks until my blood glucose test to see if I’ve developed gestational diabetes.  A pregnant friend just found out she failed the initial glucose test and now has to have the longer (and more needles) glucose test next week.   This one test is causing me some serious anxiety. I can’t do anything about it if gestational diabetes has developed, but my brain likes to freak out about these things anyway.

Oh, and no one REALLY explained to me just how much dreaming is affected by pregnancy.  Holy cow, I swear all I do at night is dream these weirdo, bizarre dreams now.  Considering I never use to have dreams I could recall by morning, this is a new and occasionally disturbing reality.

Good Ideas from My Auntie & My Sister-in-Law

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

One of my aunts posted a comment with good ideas for a couple more excellent freezer meal ideas, but now I must ask for the recipe.  Especially, the beef tips recipe.  I’ve had them in restaurants before, but never made them.  Stuffed green peppers are one of Dave’s favorites, but I have to admit that I only like the stuffing part.  Large pieces of cooked green peppers is one of those textural things I can’t make myself eat.  I LOVE uncooked green peppers though…yes, weird, I know.  And the beef stew idea is excellent and one I’ll be making tomorrow.

As for my sister-in-law’s idea to bring preemie outfits as well as the newborn outfits to the hospital, that’s a good one.  I’ve been looking at these two newborn outfits I’ve purchased and they just look big.  The tag says they are for babies 8-12 pounds.  Dave and I were both 8+ pounders at birth so I’m expecting a baby in the 7-8 pound range (hopefully 7 and not 9!!!).

So I’ve not been blogging much because there really hasn’t been any happenings around here lately.  Dave’s been working like a crazy person on maple syrup making (I’ve mostly watched from a lawn chair).  So our weekends have been entirely taken up with syrup.  And my couple days at home, I’ve been slowly working on spring cleaning.  My dining room will be finished today, except for the floor.  And if I get myself busy here pretty soon, I’ll also be able to say the living room is done.  You never really intellectualize the quantity of woodwork in a 100 year old house until you decide to wash it all.  DEAR HOLY HEAVENS does this house have some woodwork.  Every doorway has a door with trim (seriously…there are 2 doors in the dining room, 4 doors in the kitchen etc).  Every window is wooden with trim.  Every floor is bordered with trim.  And the window casings were at one time painted white, but are now peeling.  And I can’t even imagine the last time all that woodwork was washed.  The doors all have decorative panels, which were housing more dust and old nastiness in the cervices than is imaginable.  So it was a long slow process to wash everything down thoroughly in just that one room.  Oh, did I mention all the floors except the living room & kitchen are wooden as well.

The temperature is about 53 today so I’m opening windows and going to get busy.
PS:  Ya know, when you are a homemaker, it is interesting to see the stuff the goes on during the day in your neighborhood. While sitting here composing this post, I’ve just watched 3 grown men rifling through a dumpster that belongs to the apartment house next door.  None of the men even live there.  It is funny to see how much stuff people do when they think a neighborhood is deserted because everyone is out working.  (Obviously, if they do something illegal I’ll do something, but for now they seem to be mostly interested in being trash crawlers.)
