Idea for a Homemade Baby “Toy”

Friday, January 2nd, 2009

I thought I’d try to come up with a few homemade baby toy ideas.  So during this week, I thought through that 0-9 month range in regards to child development to see if I could come up with things to make that would be nice toys to play with and would be an aid to development as well.

My mom told me the other day that she has purchased some patterns to make some maternity tops for me, but she needs me to pick out the fabric.  So when I go to the fabric store, I will see if I can also find a bunch of neat remnants to make the first of my toy ideas.

My first idea is to make a small quilt (of sorts) made of basic squares of fabrics that are visually and texturally different enough to be of interest to a baby.  I don’t plan on this quilt even being particularly pretty, but sensory stimulating to the eyes and skin.   This quilt might be a good place for baby to have “tummy time”.  I know there are mass-produced things out there similar to what I am thinking about, but I think I can make something neat here at home.  I might also see if my mom can cut small squares from some of her more interesting leftover fabrics and send them to me.

Awesome Bible Study

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

Today was my first day at our parish Bible study and it was really great.  The leader is an older woman in probably her late 70s or early 80s who is just this vessel of Holy Spirit.  She is a well educated, former nun, who speaks very slowly and with perfect enunciation.   What an awesome teacher!  By far, I’m the youngest person in the group.  The rest of the gals are an eclectic bunch: three silent types, one kind of sweetly negative (if that is possible) and two talkers.

The group started the Book of Romans back at the beginning of October.  Today we began with Romans 2:12, so they aren’t zipping through anything.  Lots of sidetracked conversation, but lots of intelligent discussion too.  I’m so glad I decided to join this group.

The woman who leads and one other woman are the only ladies I even recognized.  When you go to a sizable parish you don’t see everyone who is a member.  We’ve been there over a year and have been Eucharistic Ministers for a year now, but the other ladies had never seen me before.  The teacher introduced me by saying, “she & her dear husband go to the 9AM Mass and they are always serving as Eucharistic Ministers…if Father doesn’t have enough Eucharistic Ministers these two dears always will fill in.”   She is an absolute sweet old gal.  She even somewhat reminds me of my Grandma B who passed in January.

So I think I’m really going to learn a lot from my Thursday afternoon Bible Study.

Leftovers from Yesterday

Friday, August 1st, 2008

Well, the Farmer’s market yesterday was excellent. Lots of people and lots of sales!! After the market, I went to the grocery store for the ingredients of the homemade laundry soap I was going to make. They were out of one of the key ingredients. Bummer. I knew I had to do laundry today so I ended up purchasing laundry soap again. I was so excited to try the homemade stuff, too. Another day , I suppose.

I am entertaining the idea of going to get a haircut. My hair is down to my waist now and it is just a bit too long. Dave likes my hair long, but as long as it is below my shoulder blades he won’t mind me getting it cut at all.

Besides laundry, I am going to finish freezing fresh green beans for later use, make seasoned bread crumbs from some stale bread and mash & freeze some really rip bananas to make banana bread on a day when it isn’t so hot outside. There is also some fruit in the fridge that needs to be used soon so I might make a fruit salad for dessert! YUM!

This year, I am bound and determined to be more organized about the holidays. I want to have my Christmas cards finished and ready to send out the day after Thanksgiving. And I want to give some homemade gifts to a few people. So as not to be rushed later on, maybe I’ll do some thinking about cards designs or just general holiday plans today.

I LOVE being a homemaker. (I can’t say that often enough!)

Finished the Cross-Stitch Sampler

Monday, May 19th, 2008

On Friday I finally finished the cross-stitch sampler for my mother. I ended up sending her flowers for Mother’s Day instead of the sampler, but she really likes flowers so that was okay. As soon as I find a pretty frame, I’ll mail the sampler to her. I’ll post a picture of it here soon.
