Good Morning!

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Last evening I spoke to a dear friend who I hadn’t talked to in a LONG time.  She works during the day so I can’t chat with her just any old time like I can some other friends.  And she’s got a family to tend too in the evenings so time passes and we don’t get to talk.  But we had a little time to catch up last evening and that was really nice.

I’ll not post my schedule today, but I have found that I’m getting more accomplished by chopping my day into 3 blocks and making myself do those things (or as many as I can) during that time frame.

Yesterday, I’d planned to make oatmeal cookies, but never got the time.  So today I’ll try making the cookies or maybe even banana bread…yummy!  I’ve got about 5 “bad” bananas that need to be used quickly or frozen for later use.

Over the summer, working at especially the Farmer’s Market here in town I learned so much about freezing & preserving from my neighbor farmer gal.   I am letting less produce waste than I use too.  If it doesn’t seem that I’m going to use something before it goes bad, I chop it up for later use in a veggie soup or for when I make broth.

And I’ve discovered the diversity of turnips too this summer!  The other day I made homemade mashed potatoes and I put a small turnip in with the tators to boil.  I mashed it up right along side the potatoes and you could not tell it was there.  Another way to sneak a different veggie into our meals without knowing…I love that!!

Oh!  And it snowed here last night.  It was just flurries, but it was still snow!  Dave was very excited.  He said that early snow fall sometimes predicts a nice heavy snow year.  Yeah!  We’ve had decent snow coverage the two winters I’ve lived in New England, but I’ve heard they haven’t been just really awesome snow years so I’m looking forward this winter.

We still haven’t turned our heat on yet this season.  It is almost becoming a quest to make it all the way through October before turning it on.  It has been nippy here a few evenings, but by the time you are all cuddled and asleep in bed you don’t notice a chill.  During the day, I’m up moving around and cooking so I don’t get really chilled.  Our house leaks air through these hundred year old windows like crazy.  So we’re just trying to go as long as possible without heating the neighborhood.  Thankfully, both Dave & I like it cold otherwise there might be consternation.

Well, it is nearly 8:00 so I’d better get moving on chores.

Posting the Day’s Plan Worked Pretty Well Yesterday

Tuesday, October 28th, 2008

So I’m going to do it again today.  I didn’t get everything on the list accomplished, because I got other stuff done, but it helped having the list.

6:45-10:  Make breakfast (oatmeal w/maple sugar, milk, hot tea), make Dave’s lunch, check email, blog (quickly), take laundry down, change bathroom towels, make bed, change cat water, refill cat foodstart load of laundry, make list of candy to get for Halloween (we had 80+ kids through here last year), have some quiet time (pray & journal), shower.

10-1:  Vacuum living room, clean bathroom, clean dining room, lunch, run to grocery store for couple of things, put laundry in dryer, clump cat litter, go to post office to mail latest maple syrup order.

1-5: Make oatmeal cookies, clean kitchen, start dinner, work on making a Christmas card list, put away laundry.

So that is my plan for the day.  It is dark, rainy and a cold front is on its way today so its good to be inside.

Today’s Plan

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I wrote a while back that I was going to work on coming up with a schedule for myself so that I get more accomplished.  This is my latest thought.  Instead of trying to stick to a strict timed schedule, I’m breaking my day into 3 segments and listing things I want to accomplish within those time frames…if I’ve got time leftover, it’s mine to do whatever.  My three time frames are 6:45-10, 10-1, 1-5.  This morning my 1st time frame is short on things to do because I had some blogging to catch up and a pile of emails to attend too. As I finish things today, I’ll cross them off.  I’m being daring here going public with my schedule…now I’ll feel utterly compelled to get everything accomplished.

6:45-10:  make breakfast, make Dave’s lunch, eat breakfast with Dave, help Dave get everything ready for his day, check emails, respond to emails, write blog entries, start load of laundry.

10-1:shower, empty dishwasher, clean up kitchen (including filling dishwasher, washing counter tops, washing stove top, & generally straightening the rest of the room), change cat litter, eat lunch, make list of things needed at Family Dollar, talk to mom.

1-5: clear off dining room table, generally straighten dining room, sweep & mop floor in dining room, straighten living room, start dinner, go to Family Dollar, write cards sympathy cards regarding Grandma’s passing, change bedding & make the bed, go to bank, do another load of laundry.

So it isn’t a hectic day or anything, just need to tend to some basic household stuff.  Let’s see how I do getting everything accomplished!!

UPDATE:  Okay, it’s 3:42 and the plan changed some.  Thank God Dave isn’t a task master…cuz I got sidetracked.  It was soooooooooo nice outside that I decided to do some cleaning outside instead of inside.  I actually wanted to work outside and for those of you that know me well you know that I HATE doing outside work like yard stuff.

AND I have a weight update.  I lost another pound!  That’s 16 pounds now!  WOOHOO!!!!!!!!!!!  My desire is to be down 25 pounds by Thanksgiving.  I might actually have to work at it though so we’ll see how that goes.

Great Day at Home!

Monday, September 29th, 2008

I am having a splendid day at home today.

My kitchen is spic & span from top to bottom.  Floor is drying right now, counters are empty, dishwasher is empty, sink is empty, pantry is clean and everything that didn’t belong in there is out.  I was suffocating in there.  There was stuff that belonged in every room in the house sitting in the kitchen for some strange reason.  Mind you, it hasn’t been that long since I did a complete top to bottom scrubbing of the kitchen either.

Dave and I really have a common problem…we don’t put stuff away right away.   And you know that adage about how everything should have a place.  Yeah, right.  Everything in our house seems to just decide to occupy the space in which it was set down.  We have so much stuff that doesn’t have it’s own spot to live.  I keep telling myself I’m going to buy a label maker and put labels all over the house with an attached Polaroid showing what belongs where and how it looks when the item is there.

Not being consistant putting things away isn’t the message though.  The fact that I had a nice day staying-at-home and taking care of my home was the point.  It was quiet, I was relaxed, I was able to do a nice job, and I’m happy with the results.  I get to stay-at-home tomorrow too!  YEAH!

More Veggies in the Freezer

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

With Dave’s help today, we processed two enormous butternut squash, 14 ears of corn and 4 pounds of green beans.

Dave peeled & diced the butternut squash (also peeled part of his thumb, ouchie).  I put olive oil, salt & pepper on it and roasted it in the oven for an hour and 15 minutes.  Then I put it through the food processor and into freezer bags.  I dislike squash, but I am totally willing to hide stuff like squash in soups, stews etc.  As a matter of fact, I made a vegetable beef soup for dinner tonight and put at least 1 cup of squished squash in there…can’t even tell.  Bonus is that I get the nutrients without having to taste the stuff.

“Hunting”

Sunday, September 28th, 2008

Well, Dave and I went “hunting” today.  Actually, we did the modern equivalent and went to the butcher shop.  There is a butcher shop near here that has great meat for great prices.  We stocked up on at least an entire month’s worth of meat this morning for a pretty low sum.  I repacked everything and used my handy vacuum sealer.  And I promptly put everything into our brand new freezer!

I’ve been stashing veggies away all summer so our freezer is looking pretty well stocked.  After the butcher shop, we went to the grocery store where I bought all the extra items we’ll need for the entire week for a whopping $20!!!!!  I was very impressed.  Stock piling summer veggies and buying at the local butcher shop is really saving us money.  It has really helped that at each of the Farmer’s Markets I’ve been working this summer there is at least one produce seller who has “extras” at the end of the day which they give me.

Schedule Thoughts

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

Okay, I have to admit a few character flaws.  I am rampantly undisciplined and yet a perfectionist.  How on earth I cultivated those two characteristics at the same time is beyond me.  I am so much an all or nothing person.  Either I make a detailed list everyday and feel utter worthless if I don’t accomplish every single anal-retentive entry or I make no list and get hardly anything accomplished.

So when I am thinking of making a better schedule for myself, it means listing out everything in 15 minute increments and being totally unrealistic.  I have got to come up with a happy medium.  Some months back, Dave’s solution for me was to just make a list of things that needed to be accomplished daily, it didn’t matter when.  Somehow that didn’t work for me, it was far too lenient.  When I am facing a  deadline, I’m ruthlessly disciplined.   But give me the mundane tasks with no deadline and I’m horrible.

This afternoon while sitting at the Farmer’s Market I made two schedules entitling them Option A and Option B.    Option A, I admitted right at the top that it was my ambitious schedule, the one that lists everything in 15 minute increments and is super anal.  Option B, is probably more realistic, but it feels, how should I say this, ah, not living up to the perfectionist in me.

So I had a thought.  Instead of 15 minute increments, maybe I should divide my day into 3 sections like maybe morning routine, mid-day routine and afternoon routine.  Maybe that will take Dave’s original idea of just making a list to finish everyday and my need to be a little more deadline oriented in order to avoid the terrible undisciplined part of my character.  My need for oversight is kind of desperate.  If I don’t have accountability FORGET IT!  Dave isn’t a task master.  He’s not going to want to check a paper daily to make sure I’ve done all my tasks.  So I have to find the incentive within myself, argh!!  That’s the hard part.

As I have more thoughts on fixing this little dilemma, I will post again.

No Schedule and Suffering For It

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

With our maple syrup business getting more and more busy, I am really starting to see the results of not having a set schedule for my days.  Since I do several Farmer’s Markets throughout the week on different days & times, I need to implement a schedule that accommodates.

Today I’m especially feeling the lack of a schedule because I’ve got errands Dave needs me to run, maple business that must be accomplished, a farmer’s market and we both need to eat dinner this evening and we need clothes to wear tomorrow.  Hmmm…gotta spread the load better than I have been doing lately.  My schedule is “feast or famine”, hardly anything on one day and screaming busy another.

Speaking of screamin’ busy…gotta go and get ready to leave.  But today while it is slow at the market, I think I’ll be working on some thoughts for a schedule of sorts.

Ultimate “Betty Crocker”

Monday, August 11th, 2008

I got a funny compliment from a gal at the Farmer’s Market in Somers on Saturday. We were discussing preserving the summer’s produce bounty. She doesn’t do any preserving (be it canning or freezing) so when I told her of my latest endeavors she called me the “Ultimate Betty Crocker”, hehehe. I explained that this is my first attempt at most of the stuff I’m trying this year, but she still thought it was pretty amazing. So all you gals out there, like my Aunt, who actually can do this preserving stuff for real…you are the “Ultimate Betty Crockers”.

It is funny to think that women have been preserving foods for their family’s future use since pretty much the beginning of time, yet it is considered almost an awesome lost art now. In the 80 years or so since processed foods arrived on the scene and feminism took women from the home, hardly anyone seems to preserve produce. I hope to preserve lots and lots more fruits and vegetables in the coming years. I think it is a great way to know exactly what we are putting in the bellies of our family and a great money saver. Dave & I aren’t trying to live in a world long gone, but just trying to be healthier and good stewards of our monetary blessings.

Shake n’ Bake, Sorta

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

My hubbie LOVES pork chops with Shake n’ Bake for a coating. The stuff is a bit pricey so I decided to see if I could make something like it from scratch. Last night’s attempt got approval from Dave.

A while back I bought got a Buy 1, Get 2 Free deal on whole wheat loaves of bread. We can’t come close to eating three loaves of bread before they go bad so I turned two loaves into bread crumbs and put them in a bag in the freezer.

To make the “from scratch Shake n’ Bake”, I used about a cup of the bread crumbs seasoned them with a seasoned salt mix from the grocery store. First, I dredged each chop in a beaten egg then took them through the bread crumb mix and baked on 350 for 35 minutes. They turned out pretty yummy and probably a bit more healthy than the store bought stuff. (hopefully)
